DATE: January 29th at 5 p.m.
One hundred years ago, between July 26 and August 1, 1909, Barcelona and most of its neighborhoods experienced a real revolution: the so-called Tragic Week. What began as a general strike against the sending of reservists to fight in northern Morocco, became a major popular rebellion.
Without a clear direction, groups of uncontrolled people emerged and erected barricades and began to set fire to religious buildings and clash with the army. Half of the religious buildings in Barcelona were burned.
After days of barricades and intense fighting, the insurrection, which was not followed in the rest of Spain, fizzled out and ended up failing. The repression by the state was brutal and the arrest and shooting of Francesc Ferrer Guardia, founder of the Modern School, was only the end of a hunt for what he represented: educational freedom, secularism and anarchism.
IMPORTANT: it is essential to wear an approved mask and to respect the safety distance at all times.
