Enjoy the popular Cherry Festival in Céret, the small capital of the northern Catalan region of Vallespir and refuge for artists such as Picasso; visit two of the most charming villages in the region (Amélie les Bains and Palalda); and discover the fascinating history of French Catalonia.
– CÉRET AND ITS POPULAR CHERRY FESTIVAL
In May, the charming little town of Céret in the north of Catalonia dresses up for the popular Cherry Festival: musical bands, cherry pitting contests and the weekly market. The capital of the Vallespir is known for being the town where the first cherries of the region come out, the fruit that gives its name to the town. In addition, Céret has a famous museum of modern art as a result of the visits and stays in the town and its surroundings of great artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Dufy or Masson. The village also has an important bullfighting ring.
– AMÉLIE LES BAINS
The thermal station of Amélie-les-Bains is located on the banks of the Tech river, in the heart of the Vallespir. Known for its mild climate and its hot sulfurous waters, it has two thermal establishments, the Roman Baths and the Mondony Thermal Baths.
– PALALDA
Catalonia is a medieval land and this can be seen in the hundreds of stone villages, castles, walls and legends that fortunately can be enjoyed today. This is the case of Palaldà. Located just 2km from Palalda, the small village of Palalda hides two great treasures: the Romanesque castle and the church of Sant Martí de Palaldà, which has exceptional baroque altarpieces.
