The Sarrià railroad, which descended uncovered along Balmes Street, marked the boundary between the left and right of the Eixample. If the right side of the neighborhood designed by Cerdà became the place of residence of the wealthiest class, on the left side middle-class families settled. This class difference can be seen by comparing the type of housing that was built on both sides.
But the Eixample Esquerra, despite not having such a rich modernist heritage as the right side, is home to a large number of buildings of high artistic value, some of them modernist, and some of the most important facilities of the city: the headquarters of the University of Barcelona, the Conciliar Seminary, the Faculty of Medicine and the Hospital Clínic, the Industrial School, the old Modelo prison, the old bullring of Las Arenas, as well as several hidden gardens inside blocks.
An interesting tour through the left side of the Eixample.
