Barcelona owes much to Picasso and vice versa. Born in Malaga, Pablo Ruiz Picasso spent most of his adolescence in Barcelona before moving to Paris. The city marked him deeply and throughout his life he fondly remembered his time in Barcelona and maintained a friendly relationship with many of his Catalan friends. The fact is that Picasso’s creative and vital burst of youth caught him in our city.
Picasso arrived in Barcelona in 1895, when he was 13 years old, and it was here where he had his first parties with his friends and where he discovered the pleasures that were hidden in the brothels; it was also in Barcelona where he enjoyed his first studio, in the Calle de la Plata. And it was here that he made his first engraving (L’àpat frugal) and his first illustration (which appeared in the weekly magazine L’Esquella de la Torratxa). He also held his first exhibition in Barcelona, first informally at Els Quatre Gats, the center of Barcelona’s bohemian life, and shortly afterwards at the Sala Parés, together with the already well-known Ramón Casas.
During the guided tour we will follow in the footsteps of the young Picasso in Ciutat Vella, discover the fascinating history of “Els 4 Gats” and pay special attention to the close friendship that Picasso forged in Barcelona with some of the most important Catalan artists of his time.
