Barcelona was the world center of anarchism. During the final decade of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th, Barcelona was known internationally as the Rosa de Foc (Rose of Fire).
There was a Barcelona in which cabs were forbidden, waiters and shoeshine boys did not accept tips, hats were frowned upon and the notes of The Internationale were the theme music played on every street corner. A city in which approximately 70% of the enterprises were collectivized and in whose offices sat workers and militiamen without any illustrious surname linked to the urban bourgeoisie.
Anarchist Barcelona, a unique libertarian experiment in Europe that reached its peak between July 1936 and May 1937, but whose roots go back to the end of the 19th century.
