Els Encants or Fira de Bellcaire is the largest, oldest and most emblematic flea market in Barcelona. And as with the Sunday market of Sant Antoni, the Fira de Bellcaire is already an essential part of the sentimental landscape of many Barcelonians. Its location has changed many times over the years. At first the various Encantes that existed were located outside the city walls, then they moved to Plaça Nova, Les Drassanes, Rambla de les Flors, near the Sant Antoni market and, finally, to Plaça de les Glòries.
The Clot neighborhood, known in the Middle Ages as Clotum Melis, is one of the ten neighborhoods of the Sant Martí district and until the 19th century it was an area with a markedly rural character, with farmhouses, orchards and cultivated fields that took advantage of the waters of the famous county irrigation ditch. From the 19th century onwards, factories and flour mills began to set up in the district, such as the one that gives its name to the civic center of El Clot. With the construction of the railroad and the opening of the Meridiana, the neighborhood was split in two.
A very complete tour that will allow us to know the fascinating history of the Encants/Fira de Bellcaire and discover some of the most interesting places in the neighborhood of El Clot.
IMPORTANT: it is essential to wear an approved mask and to respect the safety distance at all times.
