Sant Andreu is a real neighborhood, one of those where neighbors still greet each other in the streets and where local commerce enjoys good health. The air of the village it once was is still preserved in its historic center, full of charming alleys, small houses and century-old stores.
But Sant Andreu also hides a lot of treasures. Some, although they cannot be seen, are documented and refer to Roman times, such as the remains of the aqueduct that served the Rec Comtal, the great water channel that crossed the whole of Barcelona. Others tell of a very important industrial past, that of the 18th century, with the gigantic Fabra i Coats spinning mills, with 30,000 square meters converted for public use.
Modernism also left its mark in Sant Andreu, and rationalism has in this neighborhood the architectural jewel in the “crown”: the famous Casa Bloc, designed in 1932 by Josep LLuís Sert and Torres Clavé for the Republican Generalitat, which almost a century later still attracts architects from all over the world who come to the neighborhood to study its structure.
A very interesting guided tour through one of the most genuine neighborhoods of the city, which will allow us to discover treasures such as:
– The old Fabra i Coats factory
– The Bloc House, a masterpiece of rationalist architecture.
– Charming squares: Massades, Mercadal, Orfilia…
– A mosaic by Gaudí for the church of Sant Pacià
– A lot of curious anecdotes, such as the bomb embedded in a house in Socrates street.
