Few areas of Barcelona have undergone such a radical transformation as the current neighborhood of the Villaa Olímpica, built for the 1992 Olympics (this is where the athletes who participated in the Games were housed) on the remains of the Icària neighborhood, a degraded nucleus full of factories and warehouses. The new neighborhood, designed by Oriol Bohigas, combines residential buildings and houses with office blocks, a marina, a large shopping mall, gardens, unique monuments, a beach, the Nova Icària, etc.
The area of Diagonal Mar and the Forum is a very young and unique space dominated by modern buildings that have little to do with the rest of the city and that contrast with some old buildings of the past, such as the Torre de les Aigües or several chimneys. Under one of these chimneys is the Palo Alto complex, an old factory that has been converted into a green space and a place of work for artists and entrepreneurs. In the area closest to the sea, stands the Forum, a huge space equivalent to twenty blocks of the Eixample built in 2004 to host the Forum of Cultures, a failed event that nevertheless served to transform this entire part of Barcelona’s waterfront.
A very interesting tour to discover the evolution of the city’s waterfront.
