DATES: May 20 and 21, 2023
A spectacular weekend in Arles, a beautiful city of Roman origin and Van Gogh’s refuge; and the Camargue, the great natural paradise in the southeast of France and the largest wetland in Europe, with accommodation in a 4-star central hotel in Arles on a half-board basis (breakfast + dinner) and a very complete program to get the most out of it. benefit from our stay in this extraordinary region.
ARLES
The small town of Arles is the gateway to the Camargue. Here the Rhône river forks into two (Grand Rhône and Petit Rhône) and the territory of marshes, salt pans, rice fields and endless beaches begins. Founded by the Romans more than two thousand years ago, Arles preserves an impressive Roman legacy declared a World Heritage Site (the amphitheatre, the theater and the Baths of Constantine) and has a very peculiar light that painters like Van Gogh or Gauguin fell in love with.
The city seems to be just as Van Gogh and Gauguin left it, with its two- or three-story houses, rickety wooden shutters painted blue, cafes with charming terraces, fifty art galleries, small bookstores, antique shops, etc Only the immense Roman amphitheater seems to stand out in this city where nothing is out of place.
THE CAMARGUE
Flat and full of lagoons and marshes, the Camargue is a world apart. This vast wetland is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the coast, whether it’s to hike the trails on horseback, canoe through the reed-lined canals, or see its famous flamingos. It is a region steeped in tradition and culture, preserved by the gardians (cowboys) who herd the area’s horses and hold their own festival in Arles every May.
AIGUES-MORTES, THE BEST VIEWPOINT IN THE CAMARGUE
The medieval town of Aigues-Mortes became France’s first Mediterranean port. Located in the heart of the Gard Camargue, it looks like a true medieval fortress, with almost two kilometers of walls, several fortified gates, twenty towers and a peculiar walkway. The highest tower in Aigues-Mortes, the Constance tower, a former prison, offers from the top of its terrace a beautiful view of the enormous Camargue marshes.
