Paths of exile: Elna and Collioure Maternity Hospital

A day trip to the Roussillon region (France) to visit the Swiss Maternity Hospital of Elna and Collioure . A themed excursion along the paths of exile allows us to explore the tragic history of the Republican refugees of the Spanish Civil War through two emblematic figures: Elizabeth Eidenbenz and Antonio Machado .

The excursion can be completed with a guided tour of the Royal Castle of Collioure , which served as a prison for a thousand republican prisoners.

If you wish to broaden the thematic scope of the excursion, you can follow in the footsteps of Matisse and Derain in Collioure and/or visit the town’s Museum of Modern Art , considered one of the cradles of Fauvism, an expressionist painting movement of the early 20th century.

  • Visit to the Swiss Maternity Hospital in Elna .
  • Free time for lunch.
  • Guided tour of Collioure , with a visit to the old cemetery (Machado’s tomb) and optional entrance to the Royal Castle .
